Building a Recall That Holds
A recall is the one cue that can save your dog's life. Earn it in stages, on a long line, before you ever trust it off-leash.

Why recall matters
A reliable recall buys your dog a life — off-leash hikes, beach runs, the freedom to be a dog. It is built, not wished into being.
The stages
- Foundation on a long line (15–30 ft). Let the dog wander, then call once — brightly, once. If they turn, mark and run a few steps backward so they chase you into the reward.
- Pay generously. Recall is the highest-paying cue you own. Use real food, play, or whatever the dog truly values.
- Add distance and distraction in small steps. A friend standing still, then a friend walking, then another dog across the field.
- Never punish a late return. Even if the dog took five minutes, the moment they arrive is the safest place they know.
The marker
Use a consistent marker — a word or a click — the instant the dog turns toward you. That marker is the bridge between the turn and the reward, and it tells the dog "yes, that turn" even before they reach you.
Freedom is earned in stages. The long line is not a limitation; it is the ladder.
