The instinct

Retrievers were bred to bring back game. The retrieve is not a trick you teach them — it is a drive you give an outlet. The job is to shape it into a clean, deliverable behavior.

Shaping the retrieve

  1. Reward the glance at the object. Most owners skip this step and lose the dog. The glance is the first offer.
  2. Mark the touch — nose to the dummy. Then the mouth on it. Then the hold for one second, two, three.
  3. Shape the carry. Hold, then one step toward you, then two. Reward the dog for bringing it closer, not for dropping it.
  4. Delivery to hand. Present your hand under the dog's chin and reward the release into it. Never snatch — snatching teaches the dog to guard the object.

Raising criteria

The dog should win roughly 80% of the time to stay engaged. If they're quitting, you raised the bar too fast; if they're bored, raise it.

Channel instinct, don't suppress it. A retriever fetches; a herder gathers; a terrier hunts. Give the drive an outlet.
